motherboad failure… twice?

Bought parts of a PC and put them all together for my brother. Of course, this made it much cheaper than to just buy a pc from the shops.

Everything went well. Everything worked. I installed everything on it, which also went well. I then took the pc to my brother at his university. That’s when everything started to go wrong.

The PC would suddenly turn off without warning. For a little while it was alright because it would turn straight back on again afterwards with no problems. I suggested to my brother that all we need is a better power supply, as the one provided with the case was not powerful enough to power the PC when it’s using more applications and cpu intensive games and such.

We got a new PSU when my brother returned from University. Everything was fine for about 3 days. Then the PC shut off again. Only this time, it did not come back on after. I thought to myself it can’t be the PSU as it is more then powerful enough and it’s brand new. Upon closer inspection, when you attempt to turn on the PC, the HDD LED comes on, and so does the wireless keyboard and mouse receiver lights.
This told me that the motherboard is at fault, or possibly the CPU.

I tried taking parts out of MY PC. Since we have similarly built PcÂ’s, all components are compatible with each other. E.g. I took out my CPU and placed it in his to see if the cpu was at fault. Then I tried his cpu in my board etc. the results were very vague, and varied. I decided to send the board, cpu and ram bundle back to the company we bought it from. They tested it themselves and said the board was faulty. They replaced the bundle and sent out our new products.

To summarize, we now have a brand new psu, mobo, cpu, and ram. I installed it all into the PC case, and connected everything up. The PC was working again! hooray! ….. but only for a day. This morning my brother discovered that the same problem has occurred. The hdd led turns on, but the Fans do not spin, the hdd does not make a sound and neither does the psu fan even spin.

So once again we are faced with the same problem. WHAT IS IT THIS TIME!? the motherboard? the cpu? the ram? psu? case!?

now imp usually pretty good at troubleshooting pcs and have successfully fixed many problems, but this is the most stubborn pc IÂ’ve ever had. lol.

if anyone can suggest anything, please, please, for the love of all that is holy, please help my poor brother’s PC. Seriously though, imp willing to be open to any suggestions.

thanks for reading this horrifically long story!
